My favorite Reader music critic, Monica Kendrick, says she first thought of “Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic” when she heard of Isaac Hayes’s death over the weekend, thanks, in part, to some carnally-induced muscle memory.
The inherent funkiness of that song aside, when I heard the news, the radio-in-my-mind went right for the sorrow and cued up Hayes’s insides-out cover of “Walk On By”:
Dionne who?
Soul fans worldwide are invited to drop by the Stax Museum’s blogs and share their memories and sympathies:>>http://staxmuseumnews.blogspot.com/2008/08/isaac-hayes-in-loving-memory.html>>Thanks Scott.
Kerry, you were one of the first people I thought of when I heard this.
Weird day around here, as you can imagine. Lots of people just milling around the entrance to the Stax Museum, not sure what to do. As if Isaac’s passing wasn’t enough, it’s also the kick-off to “Elvis Week,” our annual week-long celebration of Elvis’ death. Talk about eerie.
